Baptism In The Book Of Acts


Three Different Forms Of Water & Spirit Baptism

In the Book of The Acts of the Apostles we see examples of people being baptised in water and in Holy Spirit in three different ways.

•  Sometimes baptism in water and in Spirit simultaneously

•  Sometimes baptism in water first & baptism in Spirit later

•  Sometimes baptism in Spirit is followed later by baptism in water

Baptism In Water & Holy Spirit In The Book Of ACTS

Look at the examples below and select the correct answers.

•  In ACTS 8:14 -17   the believers in Samaria were baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before they were baptised in water/ in Holy Spirit.

•  In ACTS 8:26-39 the Ethiopian government official was baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before he was baptised in water / in Holy Spirit

•  In ACTS 9:1-19 we see Paul was baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before he was baptised in water / in Holy Spirit.

•  In ACTS 10:23-48 the Roman centurion Cornelius was baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before being baptised in water / in Holy Spirit.

•  In ACTS 15:1-20 Peter reports what happened in Caesarea to the believers in Jerusalem.
    In vv 5-12 he reports that Cornelius & the others were baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before being baptised in water / in Holy Spirit.

•  In ACTS 11:16 Peter remembers that Jesus had said that -
   (a) John had baptised in....................................;
   (b) But you will be baptised in................................
   Since both these things had happened, it was obvious that Cornelius and the others ………………………………………………………………… .
•  In ACTS 15:8-11 at the Council of Jerusalem Peter says in v8 that God's confirmation of the Gentiles' faith was to be seen in the fact that………     and so there was no need for the Gentile believers to be circumcised like Jewish believers.

•  In ACTS 16:25-34 we read about the conversion of the…………………………in Philippi. We see that he and his household were baptised in water / in Holy Spirit before they were baptised in water / in Holy Spirit 
NOTE: by implication like the Ethiopian government official in ACTS 8

•  In ACTS 19:1-7 Paul arrives in Ephesus and discovers a group of believers who had been baptised in water / in Holy Spirit  but had not been baptised in water / in Holy Spirit. They had not even heard of baptism in water / in Holy Spirit. Paul explains that baptism in water is a sign of................After laying his hands on the believers, they received baptism in water / in Holy Spirit. The evidence of this was that they ............................................

The Point

The point to notice is that the order in which a person is baptised in water and in the Holy Spirit is not important. The important point is that we are baptised in both water and in the Holy Spirit as Jesus was.
