The diagram below shows how the words God spoke to individuals were passed down orally before the development of written records and then collected together to form what we now call the OLD TESTAMENT.

Oral Tradition to Written Text

In LUKE 24:44 Jesus himself refers to the Old Testament as comprising The Law, The Prophets and The Psalms (which were included in The Holy Writings, or Hagiographa)
