Two Disillusioned Disciples Meet The Messiah

In LUKE 24:13-35 we see two of Jesus' disciples -  Cleopas and possibly his wife Mary  -  walking disconsolately back to their home in Emmaus just outside Jerusalem two days after Jesus' crucifixion. They are devastated because their hopes that Jesus was God's promised Messiah had been dashed that Friday morning when he was executed at Calvary.

In a wonderful description of their desolation we see Jesus explaining the Scriptures about the Messiah and pointing out that "the Messiah had to suffer before entering his glory" (v26). And we see their incredible joy, when they eventually realise who Jesus is and that he really is alive!
